Independence


The word independence gets tossed around quite a bit. It is defined as the state of not being controlled by, or reliant on someone or something else. This weekend we celebrated America’s independence, a time to recognize our country’s desire and eventual action to be free of England’s control.


The Declaration of Independence boldly states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Our independence is built on the proclaimed foundation that “all men are created equal.” Unfortunately, as evident from recent events, we clearly have work to do as a country.


It must be recognized that independence, whether individual, organizational or national, requires sacrifice. Sacrifice in the moment for future benefits. Successful independence also requires a dependence on something or someone. What is the foundation that you count on? Additionally, what framework have you created on which others can depend?


True freedom necessitates a foundation from which to work and sacrifices to be made. On this Independence Day, let’s be thankful for the freedoms we do enjoy and appreciate the significant work that is still ahead.
